This is probably the most common question we get, and the answer surprises most people: No. 

Research on language acquisition consistently shows that grammar is not learned consciously and then applied; it emerges naturally through exposure to meaningful, comprehensible input. When you hear and understand a language enough times, your brain absorbs the patterns on its own, the same way you acquired your first language as a child, without ever studying a grammar rule. Our classes are built entirely around this process. You won't find verb charts or conjugation drills here. What you will find is Spanish (or French, or Italian) that is just within your reach, delivered in a way your brain is naturally designed to absorb.

Comprehensible Input is a term coined by linguist Stephen Krashen to describe language that a learner can mostly understand, not perfectly, but well enough that meaning comes through. When you're exposed to language at just the right level of challenge, your brain naturally acquires it. That's the core principle behind our classes. Rather than teaching you about the language, we put you inside it: through stories, conversation, shared experiences, and carefully crafted repetition, so that acquisition happens almost without you noticing.

Acquisition-Driven Instruction (ADI) is the methodology or teaching philosophy that organizes the entire classroom experience around providing that input, prioritizing proficiency over grammar study.

Yes, and this is one of the most important things to understand about how we acquire languages. Acquisition happens below the level of conscious awareness. You don't decide to acquire something; it happens when you're relaxed, engaged, and receiving comprehensible input. This is why our classes are designed to feel enjoyable rather than effortful. When students are at ease and genuinely absorbed in what's happening, the language sneaks in. Many students describe leaving class surprised by how much Spanish they understood, without feeling like they were 'studying' at all. That's the goal.

Most language apps and traditional classes focus on output: they ask you to produce language before you've had enough input to do so naturally. That creates stress, and stress actually impedes acquisition. Duolingo is essentially a vocabulary and grammar app with a gamified interface. Rosetta Stone uses immersion, which is closer to CI, but without the human connection and co-created storytelling that makes our classes work. Traditional classes ask you to memorize and perform. Our classes ask you to listen, engage, and let the language come to you. The difference is in how it feels, and in how quickly things start to stick, which tends to surprise people.

One of the foundational principles of our approach is that speaking emerges when a learner is ready. It cannot be forced, and trying to force it actually slows things down. In class, you might be asked a yes/no question, given a choice between two options, or invited to share a single word. That's the extent of it. When you are ready, you will be able to say more and more. The goal is that you feel relaxed and genuinely absorbed in what's happening, almost forgetting you're in a language class. That's when acquisition happens.

This varies from person to person, and it's one of the things that makes CI different from what most people expect. Some students start producing Spanish relatively quickly. Others understand a great deal for many sessions before speaking feels natural. Both are completely normal. What matters is not when you speak, but that when you do, it feels real, not performed. Our students consistently describe the moment speech starts to emerge as qualitatively different from anything they experienced in traditional classes. It feels like the language is coming from inside them, not being retrieved from a list.

Every teacher brings their own warmth and personality to class, so experiences vary, but there are some features that show up consistently. Spanish classes begin with a genuine check-in: how people are feeling, what the weather is like where they are in the world, anything going on in their lives. Students add events to our shared class calendar: birthdays, dentist appointments, travel plans, and those details become the raw material for the language we create together. From there, we might co-create a story as a group, watch and discuss a short video, or build on the characters and events that have already emerged from our community. Short brain breaks, like Simón Dice (Simon Says) or our número mágico game, are woven in to keep energy up and give your brain a moment to breathe. What makes our classes distinctive is not just the method. It's the community that forms. People know each other's lives, and that shared context makes the language feel real.

When in doubt, start with Foundations 1. It is genuinely designed for a wide range of learners, from absolute beginners to people who studied for years and still can't hold a conversation. Our classes work because comprehensible input meets each learner where they are; there is always someone in the room who needs every visual aid to follow along, and someone who could have their eyes closed and understand everything. Both are in the right place.

Here's a quick guide if you want to think it through:

Foundations 1: You're starting from zero, or you've studied before but speaking still feels out of reach. If you're not sure, this is your starting point.

Foundations 2: You can follow Spanish when it's clear and well-paced, even if speaking still feels uncertain. You've completed Foundations 1 or have some equivalent experience.

Intermediate: You can follow along and respond in the moment. You're starting to surprise yourself with what you can do, and you're ready for richer, more complex input.

Advanced: Spanish feels genuinely comfortable. You can hold a conversation and discuss a wide range of topics and you're ready for immersive, fast-paced discussion that pushes your fluency even further.

Live Zoom classes are capped at 20 students. In practice, classes tend to be smaller (6-12 students), which means a close-knit community feel, but don't be put off if a class fills up. More people means more energy and richer stories.

In traditional language classes, smaller usually does mean better, because the traditional model relies on the teacher correcting and drilling each student individually. Our approach works differently: the energy, variety of personalities, and richness of the stories we co-create actually improves when more people are in the room. More people means more characters, more life events to build stories around, more laughter, more momentum. Some of our most alive classes have been among the fuller ones. That said, we keep classes intimate enough that everyone is known and seen.

All classes are recorded. You can watch at your leisure if you need to miss a session, so a busy week never means falling behind.

Yes! We currently offer French and Italian as well, at multiple levels, using the same CI approach. Check our current schedule for available classes.

Our classes are designed for adults, and are also open to high school students. Younger learners are welcome to participate with a parent. We have offered classes designed for younger learners in the past. Reach out (info@expressfluency.com) if you are interested in this option.

Yes, we offer a drop-in option for a single class at a low fee. It's a low-stakes way to experience CI firsthand and get a feel for the community before signing up for a full session.
